NTNU Student tops the First Overseas Compatriot Students Translation Competition

 

The Overseas Community Affairs Council of ROC held the first Overseas Compatriot Students Translation Competition in 2020. The award ceremony was held on December 29th. More than 600 overseas Chinese students in Taiwan participated. Huang Yu Ying, a Vietnamese student from the Department of Chinese as Second Language of NTNU won the first place and received the prize of 50,000 NTD.

 

The first Overseas Compatriot Students Translation Competition focuses on Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Thai. Contestants need to submit translation and do an interview. There are 7 judges, including teachers from the Division of Preparatory Programs for Overseas Chinese Students and hosts from Radio Taiwan International that knows the foreign languages and officials of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee. More than 600 overseas Chinese students enrolled in the competition and 3 winners and 7 honorable mentions were selected.

Ms. Huang said that as soon as she knew the competition, she decided to join without hesitant and spent a few nights translating the article. She hopes to be a teacher or a translator in the future.

 

OCAC Minister Tung Chen yuan said that there are about 30,000 overseas Chinese in Taiwan. The Overseas Community Affairs Council must cultivate and nurture talents and give them a platform to show their talents. In the future, the scale of translation competition will expand with more languages. There are many Chinese in South East Asian countries. When reaching out overseas doing business, it’s important to have people speaking their language and understand the culture. Next year, singing or writing competition may be added to the category. OCAC also aim to strengthen the Chinese teaching in Europe, hoping to attract more people to learn Chinese.
