In recent years, academic communities around the world have been paying increasing attention to the issues of research ethics in order to not only pursue academic freedom but also to protect the human rights and benefits of research participants. In view of this, for the purpose of improving academic quality as well as protecting the rights of research participants, NTNU in October 2013 established the Research Ethics Office (REO), to construct the governance framework for research ethics and promote the protection of research participants.

The purposes and services of the REO are listed as follows:
  1. Set up NTNU Governance Framework for Research Ethics
  2. Assist with the review of research ethics
  3. Coordinate actions on the policy of research ethics
  4. Manage and investigate research protocols
  5. Provide consulting service for research ethics and participants’ protection
  6. Provide consulting service for the basic rights and benefits of research participants
  7. Provide education training on research ethics
