The Practices of the UNCLOS and the Resolution of South China Sea Disputes
The conference on The Practices of the United National Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Resolution of South China Sea Disputes held by NTNU Graduate Institute of Political Science and National Taiwan Ocean University Institute of the Law of the Sea discussed several important international ocean issues. The conference expected to find out the resolution for the disputes in South China Sea and cooperated together with China through this international conference.
It just reached the 10th year since China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries signed the Declaration of Conduct (DOC) in 2002. However, the declaration didn’t decrease the disputes between China and Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries. Facing the South China Sea issues, most declared that was the issue involved Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines, Vietnam, China, and Taiwan.
As the problem was getting more and more serious, the former president of Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) Galo Carrera Hurtado suggested Taiwan to negotiate with the neighboring countries. Galo Carrera Hurtado indicated that the disputes between Taiwan and other countries were difficult problems to handle. He couldn’t give any opinions or make any policy. CLCS would remain neutral with all the suggestions each country proposed in order to keep the world peace.
