The 5th Hsu Yu Ziang Cup Taiwan Youth Physics Debate Competition
“We had prepared for 5 months, we didn’t even rest in winter vacation, just spent all our time and energy in the lab!”
The captain of the team who won the first prize in the 5th Hsu Yu Zian Cup Taiwan Youth Physics Debate Competition Lin Ting Yo from Chia Yi Concordia Middle School said after the result was released. The awarding ceremony was held on the 5th of March at Taipei Far Eastern Plaza Hotel. The champion team was the EXCEL team from Chia Yi Concordia Middle School. The guiding teaching Ho Shih Ming indicated that the whole competition was carried out in English. It was actually very painful to lead the team. But he felt satisfied after seeing the great result.
The 5th Hsu Yu Ziang Cup Taiwan Youth Physics Debate Competition was organized by Far Eastern Yu Ziang Hsu Science and Technology Memorial Foundation and NTNU Department of Physics. 21 teams in total from the north, middle, and south of Taiwan participated in the competition to win the 1 million NT dollars award prize. The golden award 300 thousand NT dollars, the silver award 150 thousand NT dollars, the bronze award 60 thousands NT dollars, and the self award 4 thousand each.
The whole competition was carried out in English. The guiding teacher Ho Shih Ming indicated that he had really poor English, therefore, it was really painful to lead the team. While listening to student’s report, he often had to pause. However, he was very satisfied and happy to see the team had the great result.
The team leader Lin Ting Yo indicated that the team started to prepare since last October. They spent 2 or 3 days every week to stay at school to practice. He appreciated the support by school and they considered donating part of the prize to the school lab.
The dean of the Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica approved the purpose of the competition. NTNU Vice Principal Lin Tung Tai indicated that holding such competition was part of the responsibility of Department of Physics. The donation and support out of government was very important to Taiwan’s future. The president of the Far Eastern Organization Hsu Hsu Tung mentioned that the organization would hold the 26th International Young Physicists’ Tournament this year in Yuan Zhi University with the name of Chinese Taipei. The students who had outstanding performances this time would have the chance to participate in the competition and win the champion back again for Taiwan in July.
