Gao Xingjian and NTNU bring "Shan Hai" rock musical to national stage
National Taiwan Normal University and Chinese Nobel Laureate Gao Xingjian (高行健) are bringing Gao's A Tale of Shan Hai Jing (山海經傳), a rock-musical, to the national stage. The production will feature four showings at the National Theater between Friday, June 28 and Sunday, June 30.
Gao, a Chinese national who resides in France, and NTNU began cooperating in 2012, when Gao began lecturing at the school at the person request of University President Chang Kuo-en (張國恩). A playwrite and author, Gao is the first ethnic Chinese winner of the Nobel Prize for literature.
A Tale of Shan Hai Jing is based on the classic text Shanhaijing (literally, "Classic of Mountains and Seas"), an ancient collection of Chinese myths, folklore, and geographic details. NTNU hopes that the musical can become a "classic" of its own right in the field of Chinese-language plays.
The play features renowned performers, including Beijing opera star Chu Lu-hao (朱陸豪) and soprano Ho Kang-ting (何康婷), alongside students from NTNU.
