Charles Hopkins, who holds the UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education towards Sustainability at York University in Toronto, Canada, and Prof. Irina Safitri Zen at Sustainability, Faculty of Built Environment, University Teknologi Malaysia visited NTNU on October 9th. Vice President Sung Yao Ting and Vice Dean Liaw Shyue Cherng welcomed them personally and a forum about aboriginal education and sustainable development was held.

 

Chair of the Dept. of Geography Su Shew Jiuan, Associate Prof. Shen Su Min, Director of the Indigenous Research and Development Center Wang Ming Huey also attended the meeting. 

 

The visit is mainly about the quality of experimental education of the Indigenous and its sustainable development. We have programs about indigenous education which is to prepare teachers for related field.

 

The two professors later went to the College of Liberal Arts to conduct a lecture on the "Knowledge about the Indigenous Peoples, Indigenous Education and Sustainable Development" and gave another lecture at the Department of Geography.

 

17 Sustainable Development goals were passed in 2015 by the UN and education is the key to success. The fourth one, Quality Education is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

 

Recently, NTNU has signed an MOU with the Reorienting Education towards Sustainability of UNESCO for an education with better quality. Prof. Hopkins has proposed three steps of cooperation, which are define quality education, ensure the commitment of government and research after action. He said that hope this cooperation would be a bridge for NTNU to work with other countries in the committee for a better and more sustainable education.
