Bilingual Teachers’ Training at NTNU Given by CLIL Professionals

In order to elevate the overall English proficiency of Taiwanese, the government launched the Blueprint for Developing Taiwan into a Bilingual Nation by 2030 in 2018 and set 2019 as the first year of bilingual Taiwan. To accelerate the progress of teachers becoming bilingual teachers, National Taiwan Normal University has conducted a series of bilingual teacher tutoring and training workshops this year. The workshop “Bilingual Education: Workshop to Enhance Students’ Emergent Bilingual
Status” was held recently. This workshop is about Content and Language Integrated Learning.
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an approach where students learn a subject and a second language at the same time. A science course, for example, can be taught to students in English and they will not only learn about science, but they will also gain relevant vocabulary and language skills.
Prof. David Coulson and Prof. Michael Davies from Ritsumeikan University were invited to lead the workshop on November 15th.
David and Michael taught the teachers the basic concept of CLIL, including specific teaching instructions, concrete activities, four strands of language learning, and metacognitive awareness. They also demonstrated the student-centered methods of combining the aims of “modified dictogloss”, “jigsaw tasks” and “ranking tasks”. The same teaching material can be also used via different teaching method.
Prof. David Coulson has more than 20 years of experience in higher education in Japan. How he teaches at Graduate School of Language Education and Information Science, Ritsumeikan University. Prof. Michael Davies is also an experienced scholar with more than 10 years working in Japan. His research focus are formulaic language, vocabulary acquisition, CLIL, Global Englishes. Now he teaches at College of Letters/ Communication Program, Ritsumeikan University.
