NTNU Visits Malaysia, Fulfills Three Objectives
National Taiwan Normal University President Cheng-Chih Wu visited Malaysia 4-7 May with a delegation to participate in the National Taiwan University System’s signing of the International High School Alliance, visit two partner universities, and meet with NTNU alumni in Malaysia.
The primary purpose of the trip was to participate in a MOU signing ceremony with 13 independent high schools as part of the National Taiwan University System along with National Taiwan University and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. The signing ceremony took place on 7 May at Hin Hua High School, and is a response to the Overseas Community Affairs Council's newly launched scholarship program for outstanding overseas Chinese students to study in Taiwan. The MOU is also expected to contribute to a closer relationship between the institutions involved. During the signing ceremony, President Cheng-Chih Wu stated that the percentage of foreign students at NTNU is the second largest in Taiwan and the percentage of overseas Chinese students is the first in Taiwan. Meanwhile, Malaysian students comprise of the largest percentage among foreign students at NTNU (18%). These data shows that foreign students, especially Malaysian students, are welcomed at NTNU.
The NTNU delegation also met with two partner institutions, the University of Malaya and Tunku Abdul Rahman University. Prior to the recent pandemic, NTNU and Tunku Abdul Rahman University had cooperated in sport tours and the two schools discussed their recommencement with the lifting of pandemic restrictions. Other possibilities for future cooperation were also proposed, including mutual recognition of credits and academic collaboration. During the afternoon visit to the University of Malaya, which is ranked 70th in the world, the two schools discussed the possibility of future cooperation in dual programs and enhanced student exchange. The delegates also toured the University of Malaya's Main Library, Hong Lou Meng Research Centre, Museum of Asian Art, and Tropical Infectious Diseases Research & Education Centre.
Regarding alumni relations, the delegation met with 54 Malaysian alumni. Most of the alumni have served in the education sector, with 27 of them serving at Hin Hua High School and 5 serving at the main chapter of the United Chinese School Committees Association. The alumni shared about their recent developments as well as preparations being made for the NTNU Alumni Hall. NTNU’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Mei-Hui Liu, shared that, besides internationalization and cooperation between industry and academia, NTNU depends on the solid support of its graduates including overseas alumni for the development of the University.
