NTNU and Taipei Tech's 'Museum Without Walls' Wins Top Honors in Cultech
A “Museum Without Walls” proposal, developed by an intercollegiate team comprising students from NTNU's Department of Fine Arts, and the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering of the National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech), received top honors at the 2023 Creative Proposal for Cultural Technology competition organized by Culture Tech Alliance (Cultech).
This year a competition theme, “Youth Solutions to Corporate Challenges,” invited fifteen companies to present challenges that encouraged innovative solutions from the perspectives of a younger generation. The NTNU/Taipei Tech entry, entitled “A Museum Without Walls: AR Journey through Art and Culture,” uses Augmented Reality (AR) technology to remove physical barriers to art, transforming the entire city into an exhibition space. Using the NTNU Art Museum as a model, the app enables individual users to choose, learn, and create artistic narratives centered around the Museum. Visitors can transcend the physical confines of the Museum to experience a variety of virtual exhibitions, extending outdoors from the museum to explore nearby vistas and public art.
The entry prevailed after an intense three-stage competition among a pool of 123 proposals, to win the ARPlanet Enterprise Award and qualifying for the final round. Among 20 finalists, it was adjudicated by a panel of judges comprising representatives from participating corporations and Cultech. The NTNU/Taipei Tech entry was awarded the Point-of-Sale (POS) Grand Prize for prototype development, presented by Acer founder, Stan Shih.
The award-winning project aligns with the Ministry of Education’s initiative to integrate display technology at art venues. It was a collaborative effort led by Dean Professor Wen-Chung Kao of the College for Industry Academia Innovation, with support from Professor Cheng-Hung Lin, Associate Vice President of Office of Research and Development; Associate Professor Yao-Hua Su of the Department of Fine Arts; and a Taipei Tech team led by Professor Tung-Ju Hsieh. Contributing team members who played a crucial role in the project’s success include Chi-Yu Lin from NTNU's Department of Fine Arts executive master’s degree program, and Wei-Jer Hsu, Li-Sen Lin, and Yu-Lin Chen from the Taipei Tech Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering master’s degree program
This mobile app, catering to both consumers and businesses, offers three AR-based interactive games with precision navigation, an anime virtual guide, and health data integration. It also includes a user-friendly questionnaire and satisfaction survey for data visualization and big data analysis. After the initial testing stage, the app has successfully gathered digital content and data that will facilitate expansion to other projects.
