NTNU’s Strategic Ties with Germany Open Doors for Students

NTNU has markedly expanded its global influence by cultivating partnerships with a broad array of overseas institutions, with a particular emphasis on Europe. Aligning with government initiatives, NTNU has deepened its connections with Germany’s most prestigious universities, establishing more sister university relationships there than with any other country. Currently, NTNU is partnered with 20 German universities, 10 of which have formal exchange agreements. Since these programs began, more than 250 students have taken advantage of the opportunity to engage in academic exchanges in Germany.

German universities are renowned for their high educational standards, diverse academic offerings, and strong international orientation. They collaborate closely with industries to promote technology transfer and innovative research and are key drivers of global innovation. NTNU’s partner institutions in Germany include Freie Universität Berlin, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Goethe University Frankfurt, Heidelberg University, Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Technical University of Darmstadt, University of Bayreuth, University of Münster, and Universität Konstanz. These universities are highly regarded in academic circles and are sought-after study-abroad destinations .

Students who have participated in exchanges to Germany consistently describe their experiences as positive, noting that the academic environment as open and supportive, with professors who, despite their distinguished achievements, remain approachable and eager to engage in academic discussions. Many students also recommend the summer and winter language courses offered by German universities and encourage attending classes with local students. Beyond academics, Germany’s rich cultural scene—from theater performances to museums—deepens students’ appreciation of the country’s heritage. The welcoming attitude of German society towards international students and the diverse living environment also leave a lasting impression.

The application process for this year’s university-level exchange programs will begin on October 28. To help students prepare, experience- and information-sharing sessions have been scheduled for early October. Additionally, a representative from Georg-August-Universität Göttingen will visit NTNU in mid-October to provide further insights. NTNU has also introduced a special course this semester titled “Global Literacy Action Program” (Course Code: S0C9003), which covers all aspects of the application process. Students interested in exchange programs are encouraged to enroll to gain a comprehensive understanding of studying abroad.
