From Batik to Biotech: NTNU’s World of Opportunities

At a recent NTNU event, students immersed themselves in the art of Indonesian batik, exploring traditional clothing, cuisine, and the cultural significance of this intricate textile. Organized by NTNU’s International Office in partnership with Indonesian students from the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA), the 'Patterns of Indonesia' experience highlights NTNU’s commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding and global awareness.

NTNU has been committed to creating a multicultural campus through initiatives like the Taiwan Experience Education Project (TEEP), the International Internship Pilot Program (IIPP), and its partnership with Indonesia's IISMA. These programs provide both local and international students the opportunity to experience a range of global cultures within Taiwan’s academic and industrial environments. By integrating these initiatives, NTNU supports a dynamic, internationally focused learning environment that emphasizes cultural collaboration and academic exchange.

Taiwan Experience Education Project: Bridging Industry and International Talent

Since 2019, NTNU has participated in the Taiwan Ministry of Education’s Taiwan Experience Education Program (TEEP), offering international students hands-on internships in fields such as Smart Machinery, Blockchain technology, and Biotechnology. To date, 14 NTNU faculty members from the College of Science, College of Technology and Engineering, and Science Education Center have hosted 46 students from 15 countries, with plans to expand the program in the coming academic year.

International Internship Pilot Program: Strengthening Global Research Networks

Supported by Taiwan’s National Science Council, NTNU’s International Internship Pilot Program (IIPP) seeks to attract international research interns. Open to 600 applicants per phase, this program connects students with NTNU’s science and engineering faculty, fostering long-term scientific collaboration. Over the years, NTNU has hosted interns from countries including India, Malaysia, Mexico, France, and the United States. The program also encourages interns to consider further study or employment in Taiwan, contributing to the country’s scientific research capacity.

Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards: Building Cross-Cultural Understanding

Since 2010, NTNU has partnered with the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology through the IISMA scholarship, enabling Indonesian undergraduate students to study abroad for one semester. NTNU, one of six Taiwanese universities chosen for this collaboration, has hosted 29 IISMA students. The recent batik event highlighted traditional Indonesian culture through art, cuisine, and interactive presentations, fostering cross-cultural understanding and contributing to NTNU’s multicultural campus environment.

Expanding Multicultural Opportunities on Campus

NTNU’s commitment to a multicultural campus is evident in these diverse programs. With initiatives exploring the heritage of countries like Indonesia and Myanmar, NTNU seeks to deepen students' understanding of Southeast Asia and beyond. These efforts bring global perspectives to the NTNU community, preparing students for a world that increasingly values cross-cultural understanding.
