Distinguished Lecture Explores Taiwan and Japan’s Semiconductor Collaboration

Professor Riichiro Saito, a Yushan Scholar and Chair Professor in NTNU’s Department of Physics, delivered a lecture on "The Challenges of Semiconductors" at NTNU on November 29, 2024. The event, part of NTNU’s Distinguished Lecture Series, attracted over 120 attendees on-site and an additional 120 participants online from Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Japan.

An Emeritus Professor at Tohoku University and research supervisor for the Japan Science and Technology Agency’s (JST) CREST project, Professor Saito addressed global challenges in the semiconductor industry, particularly the demands for miniaturization and high performance. A specialist in carbon nanotubes and low-dimensional materials, he emphasized the potential of emerging materials such as carbon nanotubes and 2D materials to drive technological innovation.

The lecture sparked discussions on Taiwan-Japan collaborations, including opportunities linked to the establishment of a TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) factory in Kumamoto, Japan. The event was moderated by Professor Hsiang-Lin Liu from NTNU’s Department of Physics and attracted scholars, industry experts, and students, including a delegation from Kumamoto University. NTNU Vice Presidents Yao-Ting Sung and Kwun-Min Chen, along with Wen-Chung Kao, Dean of the College of Interdisciplinary Industry-Academia Innovation, were also in attendance.

This lecture highlighted NTNU's dedication to advancing technological research and promoting international academic collaboration. The Distinguished Lecture Series will continue throughout the school year, featuring global scholars, including Nobel laureates physicist Didier Queloz, writer Gao Xingjian, and economist Myron Scholes.
