NTNU Visits Four Top British Universities: Expands Taiwan-UK University Cooperation
NTNU President Cheng-Chi Wu led a delegation to the United Kingdom on January 15-23, 2025 to meet with four British universities in the world’s top 100, and expand cooperation with NTNU’s UK partners. Among the institutions visited were the University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, Durham University, and UCL.
01/16 University of Edinburgh. The University of Edinburgh, currently ranked 27th globally in the QS World University Rankings, is amongst the oldest universities in the English-speaking world, and is one of Scotland’s four ancient universities. It has been the academic home to several Nobel Prize laureates and prominent government officials. As members of the Taiwan-UK University Consortium, the NTNU delegation visited the Moray House School of Education and Sport to discuss collaboration plans for bilingual education.
01/17 University of Glasgow. The University of Glasgow, currently ranked 78th globally in the QS World University Rankings, is the largest university in Scotland by enrollment and has been home to some of history's most influential figures, including economist Adam Smith and engineer James Watt. It is a valued key partner of NTNU, with both universities having signed a university-wide memorandum of understanding and student exchange agreements. The NTNU delegation met with University of Glasgow Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Vice President for External Relations Ms. Rachel Sandison, and Dean for Global Engagement Professor Konstantinos Kontis, to share NTNU’s Global Strategy direction for 2025, and to discuss about collaboration plans in the field of education. The visit to the University of Glasgow followed a comprehensive full-day schedule, with the delegation meeting professors from several different colleges, including the School of Education and the School of Social and Sustainability Management.
01/20 Durham University. Durham University, ranked 89th globally in the QS World University Rankings, is the third oldest university in England. Durham is renowned for its distinctive collegiate system, comprising 17 colleges that play a central role in student life, managing social, recreational, and accommodation needs independent of the university’s academic departments. The delegation met with Vice Chancellor Professor Karen O’Brien, Deputy Head of Global Opportunities and Experience Mr. Simon Litchfield, and other representatives. During this visit, the NTNU delegates gained valuable insight into how Grey College, Hatfield College, and University College promote inclusivity, support, and assistance to their students. The delegation also toured several of Durham University’s historic sites, including the Oriental Museum, which showcases art and culture from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Lastly, the delegation met and engaged with three students from Durham University who previously went on exchange to NTNU.

01/22 University College London. The University College London (UCL), currently ranked 9th globally in the QS World University Rankings, has been a valued partner of NTNU for 25 years, with NTNU having signed a memorandum of understanding with the UCL Institute of Education and a student-exchange agreement with the UCL Department of European and International Social and Political Studies. The delegation met with Vice Provost Professor Jennifer Hudson, and Director and Dean of the UCL Institute of Education Professor Li Wei to discuss about research and dual-degree collaboration opportunities in the field of education.
Through this visit, the delegation exchanged valuable insights on various practices, including internationalization, university management, museum management, and bilingual education. This marks a remarkable beginning for more research collaboration and exchange opportunities between Taiwanese and UK universities.
