Dr. Yao-Ting Sung Becomes 15th President of NTNU

National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) officially inaugurates its 15th president, Dr. Yao-Ting Sung, on 23 February 2026, marking a new chapter for the University.

The inauguration ceremony was officiated by Taiwan’s Administrative Deputy Minister of Education, Mr. Chun-Chang Chu. Outgoing President Cheng-Chih Wu transferred the university seal to President Sung, signifying the continuation of NTNU's mission and institutional legacy.

A Gathering of Leaders

The occasion drew more than 300 guests throughout Taiwan and abroad. Among those in attendance were former President of the Examination Yuan President, Jong-tsun Huang; former Minister of the Interior, Kun-huei Huang; and former President of the Legislative Yuan, Jin-pyng Wang, who also serves as Honorary Chairman of the National NTNU Alumni Association. Other guests also included former Ministers of Education Ovid Tzeng, Ching-ji Wu, and Wen-chung Pan. The Presidents of National Taiwan University and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology were also present, alongside community representatives, distinguished alumni, and senior university administrators.

Outgoing President Reflects on a Decade of Progress

In his opening remarks, Deputy Minister Chu recognized NTNU’s contribution to teacher education in Taiwan and its distinctive influence within Taiwan's higher education landscape. He commended outgoing President Wu for steering the university through a period of significant transformation, citing achievements including NTNU's designation as a Bilingual University, the establishment of the College of Interdisciplinary Industry-Academic Innovation and a semiconductor credit program developed in partnership with TSMC, and hosting on-campus lectures by Nobel Prize laureates.

Under Wu's leadership, NTNU also advanced its interdisciplinary bachelor program initiative, saw its international student population rise to 13 percent of total enrollment — the highest among national universities — and completed fundraising exceeding NT$300 million for a new facility focused on international teaching and research. Reunions were also organized for alumni celebrating 30, 40, 50, and 60 years since graduation, ensuring a robust and lifelong NTNU community and network.

In his farewell address, President Wu expressed gratitude to faculty, students, alumni, and the administrative team for their collective efforts and unwavering support. He noted that NTNU had navigated a turbulent period in higher education with steady resolve, deepening its academic capabilities, expanding international collaboration, and strengthening alumni engagement. He expressed confidence that the University would continue building on these foundations under President Sung’s leadership.

President Sung Charts the Path Ahead

In his inaugural address, President Yao-Ting Sung outlined an ambitious yet grounded vision for NTNU's future, centered on three strategic pillars: consolidating the University’s foundations, elevating its academic and social impact, and shaping a New NTNU ready to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world.

President Sung emphasized the importance of building a campus environment that is both sustainable and human-centered. He committed to advancing research excellence, fostering technological integration and industry collaboration, strengthening graduate employability, and deepening NTNU's long-standing commitment to the values of teaching and educator training.

The new NTNU President highlighted the urgency of responding to two major trends: the rise of AI and the challenges of a super-aging society. Sung called on the University to lead in educational innovation and social progress.

In closing, President Sung quoted a passage from the I Ching: 'As heaven moves with vigor, so the noble person strives constantly for self-improvement; as the earth sustains all things, so the noble person supports others with great virtue.' This passage, he said, reflect both his gratitude toward those who have dedicated themselves to NTNU and his personal commitment as NTNU’s 15th President.

Shared Expectations for the Road Ahead

Former Legislative Yuan Speaker Jin-pyng Wang, speaking on behalf of the Alumni Association, called on NTNU graduates to stay connected to their alma mater and expressed hope that President Sung will lead NTNU toward becoming an even more competitive and comprehensive university.

With the inauguration complete, NTNU moves forward united behind its motto of 'Sincerity, Integrity, Diligence, and Simplicity,' and looks to President Sung to carry the institution into a new era of academic excellence, global engagement, and enduring educational leadership.
