NTNU Mandarin Training Center Offers A Taste of Taiwan

For nearly seven decades, the Mandarin Training Center (MTC) at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) has stood at the forefront of Chinese-language education for international learners. As the largest and most distinguished center for teaching Mandarin as a second language in Taiwan, the MTC has long been more than a language school. It serves as a gateway for people abroad to immerse themselves in Taiwanese life. Last year in 2025, MTC surpassed 10,000 enrolled students for the academic year, marking a full and robust recovery following the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Legacy of Excellence

Founded in the autumn of 1956, the NTNU Mandarin Training Center has cultivated an unbroken tradition of rigorous, communicative language instruction. Today, its student body represents more than 80 countries, making it one of the most internationally diverse Mandarin learning communities in the world. Over the past three years, the top countries of origin have consistently included Japan, the United States, Thailand, and Indonesia, with South Korea and Vietnam alternating as the fifth most represented nationality.

The Center demonstrated remarkable resilience during the pandemic. From 6,144 student enrollments in 2022, MTC’s 10,000-plus students in 2025 is comparable to its pre-pandemic peak enrollment. This trajectory reflects not only pent-up global interest in Mandarin learning, but also the enduring reputation of NTNU's programs and the appeal of Taiwan as a destination for language study.

A Curriculum Built for Real Communication

At the heart of the MTC's approach is a commitment to balanced, practical language development. The Center's curriculum spans nine proficiency levels, with clearly defined competency benchmarks at each stage. MTC Director Ya-hsun Tsai emphasizes that even students who begin with zero background in Mandarin can, through consistent study over one year, achieve the communicative competence needed for daily life in Taiwan.

For heritage learners and students of Chinese descent who already possess some spoken ability, the Center offers specialized literacy-focused courses to strengthen reading and writing skills. The MTC also designs tailored programs for institutional partners and corporate clients, adapting its curriculum to meet the specific needs of different groups.

The Center's teaching standards are equally rigorous. Instructor recruitment is highly competitive each year, with a strong emphasis placed on demonstrated pedagogical ability. Students, in turn, must meet clearly defined proficiency benchmarks before advancing to the next level. Every MTC graduate genuinely earns their certification.

Learning Mandarin, Living Taiwan

One of MTC’s guiding principles is that language learning must be embedded in lived cultural experience. Classroom instruction is consistently complemented by hands-on engagement with Taiwanese traditions, festivals, and everyday life. MTC students use Mandarin not just to study, but to truly participate in the world around them. During their studies, MTC students also have the opportunity to try their hand at making pineapple cakes, soup dumplings, and Taiwanese bubble tea. Other cultural experiences include indigo dyeing, traditional opera face painting, tea picking, earth oven cooking, glove puppetry, and the annual Mazu religious procession. As an integral part of the Center's curriculum, students engage with the living fabric of Taiwanese society while practicing their Mandarin in genuinely meaningful contexts.

Professional Matchmaking in Taiwan

Since many international students in Taiwan are preparing for future careers, the MTC also arranges visits to Taiwanese companies and industries. MTC students are directly introduced to Taiwan's dynamic business environment ranging from tech to pet care. These experiences not only enrich students' understanding of the island's economic landscape, but also help cultivate the professional connections and personal affinity that may affect their future career decisions.

The NTNU Mandarin Training Center warmly welcomes inquiries from prospective students, institutional partners, and collaborating organizations worldwide. For more information on programs, enrollment, and partnership opportunities, please visit the Center's official website.
