Five MTC Students Win at Foreign Students Chinese Public Speaking Competition

2017 Foreign Students Chinese Public Speaking Competition was held at National Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall on November 3rd. Five students from the Mandarin Training Center were selected as representatives. Under the instruction of three senior Chinese teachers at MTC, all of them stood out of 77 contestants and received the second prize, the third prize and three honorable mentions.

NTNU Student Receives Red Dot Design with Sign Language Learning App

Chiang Po Yi, a graduate student from the Department of Design, received the 2017 Red Dot Design with a sign language learning app MGISL. This is his second award related to sign language and the first one was from the International Design Award in 2013. He became a designer by coincidence. According to Chiang, designing is not only for the product but to see the problem and solves it. The reason for him to design the app is that hearing impaired people are misunderstood because of lack of communication. By learning sign language with MGISL, the gap can be shortened.

Viola Masters Nobuko Imai and Koji Otsuki Came to NTNU

Nobuko Imai, a Japanese classical violist with an extensive career as soloist and chamber musician, and Koji Otsuki, a professional in baroque music, came to Taiwan in their busy schedule to give lecture to NTNU students on September 26th.

Su Wen Hsuan Tops at 8th Flute Festival Singapore

Su Wen Hsuan, a senior student of the Dept. of Music, recently stood out from many outstanding flute players around the world and won the championship of the open category at the 8th Flute Festival Singapore 2017.In the final, she played Chant de linos by A. Jolivet, a piece that’s rich in style and requires sophisticated technique. She is highly appraised by the judges.

Prof. Shellnutt from the Dept. of Earth Sciences Receives Junior Research Investigators Award

Associate Professor of the Department of Earth Sciences John Gregory Shellnutt was awarded the Junior Research Investigators Award. On June 2nd, Prof. Shellnutt was given the award by the President of Academia Sinica James C. Liao for his breakthrough on the basic knowledge of Petrology and Geochemistry
