University of Bonn Professor Dr. Matthias Herdegen Visits from Germany

University of Bonn professor Dr. Matthias Herdegen visited National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) on March 27th. He met with NTNU president Kuok-en Chang. President Chang invited Dr. Herdegen to teach at NTNU in hopes of opening up yet more opportunities for international exchange.

Nobel Prize for Literature Committee Member Offers a Glimpse of the Subtle Beauty of the Chinese Language

Göran Malmqvist is the only commit member of the Nobel Prize for Literature who is fluent in Chinese. Last November, Malmqvist was invited by National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) to serve as a chair professor. On March 25th, NTNU's Center for General Education held a lecture by Malmqvist titled "A Brief Discussion of Important Phenomena in the History of the Chinese Language." Malmqvist's speech led the audience into the marvelous world of sinology.

Visitors from University of Sydney Hope to Open up Further Opportunities for Cooperation

Dr. Michael Spence, from Australia's top university, the University of Sydney, recently led a group to Taiwan to better understand Taiwan's culture and discuss potential opportunities for cooperation. Accompanied by the section chief of the Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shih-hsu Hsu, the Australian group paid a visit to National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) on March 6th. NTNU President Kuo-en Chang welcomed them personally. During the visit, the two sides both shared their views about potential areas of cooperation and exchange between the University of Sydney and NTNU.

NTNU is ranked 42th in the world in the latest QS Subject Rankings

The QS World University Rankings published on February 26th, 2014, announced the world rankings of universities for 30 individual subjects. National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) is listed in the top 200 for four of these subjects. The ranking of NTNU in the subject of education rose from last year’s number 50 to number 42 this year. In addition, NTNU once again is among the top 150 world universities for modern languages and the top 200 for communication and media studies for the first time. Moreover, the University is ranked among the top 100 world universities for linguistics.

NTNU-Jingmei Women’s Tug of War Team Shines at World Championships

The World Indoor Tug of War Championships are held once every two years. This year (2014), the games were held in Ireland, and the Chinese Taipei women’s team was made up of a group of students from the Department of Physical Education at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) and Taipei Jingmei Girls High School. On February 22nd, the team took second place in the 540 kg world championship division and, on February 23rd, grabbed first place in the 500 kg world championship division. The team won two matches in a row, and, all together in the open club championships, earned three gold and three silver medals. Their accomplishments have brought glory to the people of Taiwan.
